PE Intent
At Bottesford Federation we are athletes!
At Bottesford Schools Federation, we believe that high-quality Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) plays an important role in preparing children to live healthy, active and happy lives. We want every child to experience PE learning that is positive, inclusive, motivating and purposeful.
Our curriculum is designed as a journey from the earliest development of fundamental movement skills through to the confident application of skills, tactics, performance and decision-making in Key Stage 2. Children are given regular opportunities to explore movement, practise and refine skills, communicate and collaborate with others, compete positively and reflect on their own performance.
Through PE and physical activity, we aim to develop children's physical and mental wellbeing while helping them to develop the knowledge, skills, confidence and positive attitudes they need to enjoy being active throughout their lives. We want children to develop a love of movement and exercise from an early age, building healthy habits and laying the foundations for lifelong participation in physical activity.
Our PE curriculum provides opportunities for every child to RISE: demonstrating Respect for others, showing Integrity in their actions, Striving to improve and becoming Empowered to take responsibility for their own learning, health and physical development.
Our RISE Values Through PE:
Respect: Children demonstrate fairness, good sportsmanship, teamwork and consideration for others. They learn to communicate, cooperate, take turns and celebrate the success of others.
Integrity: Children follow rules, make honest decisions, take responsibility for their actions and demonstrate positive sporting behaviour, whether they win or lose.
Strive: Children work towards their personal best through practice, challenge, perseverance, evaluation and reflection. They learn that mistakes and setbacks are part of learning and that effort can lead to improvement.
Empowered: Children become increasingly confident and independent in making decisions, solving problems, applying tactics, leading activities and taking responsibility for their own learning, health and physical development.
Our intent is deliberately coherent across the federation. The emphasis changes as children progress: from exploring and developing movement, to applying and combining skills, and ultimately to making increasingly independent decisions, evaluating performance and taking leadership and responsibility.

What We Want Children to Know and Be Able to Do
Across the federation, our curriculum develops a combination of substantive knowledge and disciplinary skills. Children revisit, practise and apply learning so that knowledge and skills become increasingly secure and transferable.

Our PE Curriculum
-
We follow the Get Set 4 PE scheme of work and use the National Curriculum as key reference points. These provide a starting point from which we identify the knowledge and skills children need to develop, revisit and embed throughout their time at Bottesford.
-
Our planned sequence of learning ensures that fundamental movement skills and key knowledge are revisited, further developed and embedded as children progress through the federation. Retrieval and regular opportunities to practise previously learnt skills support long-term learning.
-
Children are given opportunities to explore, experiment, communicate, collaborate and compete in a positive and supportive environment. They learn to apply skills in new and different contexts and to recognise and evaluate their own success.
-
We provide appropriate support and challenge because children develop at different rates. Our aim is for every child to participate, succeed and experience enjoyment in physical activity.
-
Our School Sport offer develops and broadens the learning taking place in PE. Children have opportunities to participate in a range of sports and physical activities in different settings and develop links with community sports and activities.
-
We ensure that children have opportunities to experience competition. Representing their class or school at sporting events helps children to develop confidence, resilience, teamwork and a sense of belonging to the school community.
-
We promote a physically active culture throughout the federation. Physical activity is encouraged and celebrated both in and out of the classroom and across the wider curriculum.
-
At KS2, children receive swimming instruction designed to develop competent, confident and proficient swimming, the effective use of a range of strokes and safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
-
Leadership opportunities are an important part of our provision. Across the federation, Sports Ambassadors support organised sport at break and lunchtime while developing leadership, confidence and responsibility through organising and officiating activities.
Our Disciplinary Skills Develop Over Time
In the earlier stages of the federation, children are supported to develop confidence, control, coordination, balance, spatial awareness and simple decision-making. As they progress through KS2, these foundations are applied with greater independence through tactical understanding, performance, evaluation, reflection, communication, teamwork, leadership and problem-solving.
